I've been a healthcare professional for the past 15 years, having worked both in the hospital and community environment.
Burnout was one of the most difficult challenges I faced, and when you're in it, there almost seems to be no way out. It took me almost 10 years to find the strategies to survive this.
I was burnt out, unhappy and moody. What I thought coming out of school was completely different after you worked in it for years. You know what I mean if you’ve been in the industry.
It really hit me hard in 2016, I was working full time, taking care of my then2 kids (I now have 3 ), and I was stressed AF.
It wasn’t uncommon for me to lay in bed just sobbing.
Working long upside-down hours, dealing with heavy patient loads, not having enough staff, basically no breaks plus my homelife with kids to feed, events to go to, and also paying some attention to my husband.
It all got me.
I was past the point of everything even feeling ‘too much’. I felt empty, mentally exhausted and lost most of my motivation. I was exhausted all the time.
I wasn’t sleeping enough. I wasn’t taking enough time to socialize or to relax, I felt like I was working all the time.
Work was chaotic and I was in this constant high-pressure environment, and I often felt like my hard work wasn’t really recognized.
But I kept showing up because I had to. I couldn’t say no to extra clients or extra shifts, because they needed me.
I know I had been feeling the stress for a long time, but then suddenly it got to the point where life just wasn’t what I wanted it to be, and I’d found myself being disengaged, detached and almost helpless.
Once I figured out how to prime my body, mind and soul to be able to take on whatever came my way so I wouldn’t fall back into burnout - I was able to get back to feeling like myself again, full of energy, patience with my family and most importantly, love for myself.
My mission is to help women in healthcare regain their energy so they can once again be the cheerful and joyful leaders they used to be when they first started.
Having been through this as a nurse of almost 15 years, being in the front lines for 13 of those years, I have been through the trenches of what it means to be a healthcare professional.
I know how difficult it is when you’ve lost that zest for life, your purpose with the exhaustion that haunts you every day. It’s so beautiful on the other side.
